PEARSON BTEC LEVEL 3
NATIONAL CERTIFICATE IN MUSIC PERFORMANCE

We live in a fast moving world. Pearson BTEC qualifications will equip you with skills to take into the music industry but also into other areas, including further study at Higher Education.

While employers continue to demand high academic standards, they also want more. They want people who can adapt, innovate, see connections, communicate and work with others.

Competition for careers within the music industry is highly competitive and you will need to show enthusiasm, drive, determination and professionalism. You will have many opportunities to perform at external events throughout the academic year in order to gain confidence and develop.

We encourage all students to keep up to date with current music and musical trends. You should also be prepared to practise your instrument for a minimum of an hour per evening, conduct coursework outside of college hours and be available for gigs and external events

IS THE COURSE SUITABLE FOR ME?

We do expect students to be having instrumental lessons at this level as specialist teachers are essential for developing and stretching a persons abilities. There are also a number of units where having guidance and mentor sessions with a specialist is an essential part of the assessment criteria.

We do expect a minimum of grade 4 on your chosen instrument. If you do not have this, you will be expected to attend an audition where key skills will be assessed. This will include sightreading on your instrument and performance techniques. If you have any questions about this, please do not hesitate in contacting me (s.glover@thepolesworthschool.com)

Your achievement in this subject is dependent upon excellent attendance, punctuality and effort. You will learn in a

friendly atmosphere, using a variety of assessment methods.

You will be assessed regularly on live performances either in college or at external venues and given feedback on your progress.

There will be a controlled asessment during your second year that will be practical based and will have to be completed in a set period.

Discussions and presentations are a vital part of our assessment process and you will be expected to contribute to those and reading and listening exercises.

You will review your own performance in 1:1 sessions with your tutor.

Your course work will  be verified by an external verifier as well as being internally assessed within school.

“If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music. … I get most joy in life out of music.”  - Albert Einstein

'Studying BTEC music gave me the confidence as a musician and allowed me to develop technically on my instrument. I went on to study popular music at university and had more ensemble experience and knowledge of different styles than anyone else! I would definitely recommend this course to anyone with a love of music' - Luke 2019
